Data from an external source

In this tutorial, you will learn how to implement a widget that fetches data from an external source and updates all own instances in a set interval of time.

You will build an “external data fetch” feature that allows users to insert a predefined widget that will show the current Bitcoin rate and it will be updated with the set time interval fetching data from a predefined external source. You will use widget utilities and conversion to define the behavior of this feature. Later on, you will use UI library to create a ButtonView that will allow for inserting new instances of external source widgets. You will also learn how to update the widget data based on the editor API.

# Before you start

This guide assumes that you are familiar with the widgets concept introduced in the Implementing a block widget and Implementing an inline widget tutorials. The tutorial also references various concepts concerning the CKEditor 5 architecture.

# Bootstrapping the project

The overall project structure will be similar to one described in the Bootstrapping the project section of the “Implementing an inline widget” tutorial.

The easiest way to get started is to grab the starter project using the commands below.

This will create a new directory called data-from-external-source with the necessary files. The npm install command will install all the dependencies, and npm run dev will start the development server.

The editor with some basic plugins is created in the main.js file.

First, lets define the ExternalDataWidget plugin. The project structure should be as follows:

You can see that the external data widget feature follows an established plugin structure: the master (glue) plugin (external-data-widget/externaldatawidget.js), the “editing” (external-data-widget/externaldatawidgetediting.js), and the “UI” (external-data-widget/externaldatawidgetui.js) parts.

At this stage you can run the project and open it in the browser to verify if it is loading correctly.

# The model and the view layers

The external data widget feature will be defined as an inline (text-like) element so it will be inserted into other editor blocks that allow text, like <paragraph>. The external data widget will also have a data-resource-url attribute. This means that the model representation of the external data widget will look like this:

The syntax presented above is used by our debugging tools, such as CKEditor 5 inspector, which is particularly helpful when developing new rich-text editor features.

# Defining the schema

The schema definition of this widget is almost the same as in the inline widget tutorial, the only thing that is different is the allowAttributes. In our case we want to allow the 'data-resource-url' attribute.
Instead of passing all the attributes to the configuration object we can use generic items to inherit already predefined options.

You can also use this opportunity to import the theme file (theme/externaldatawidget.css).

Once the schema is defined, you can now define the model-view converters.

# Defining converters

The HTML structure (data output) of the converter will be a <span> with a data-resource-url attribute with the external resource URL as its value.

  • Upcast conversion. This view-to-model converter will look for <span>s with the data-resource-url attribute and will create model <externalElement> elements with the same data-resource-url attribute set accordingly.
  • Downcast conversion. The model-to-view conversion will be slightly different for the “editing” and “data” pipelines as the “editing downcast” pipeline will use widget utilities to enable widget-specific behavior in the editing view. In both pipelines, the element will be rendered using the same structure.

As you might have noticed, the editing part imports the ./theme/externaldatawidget.css CSS file which describes how the widget will look like and how it will be animated when a new value arrives:

# Creating the UI

The UI part provides a ButtonView that users can click to insert the external data widget into the editor.

Register and configure the toolbar button as shown below. The icon of the button can be found among official Bitcoin promotional graphics. Put the SVG file in the ./theme directory and import it next to the UI plugin so it can be used by the button.

# Handling the external source

In this tutorial we will use an external API that provides a current Bitcoin rate (in USD). This endpoint does not need any API keys and it is free to use but it has some limitations.

The data will be fetched every 10 seconds. Each instance of the widget will be updated at the same time. To achieve that, we need to modify the ExternalDataWidgetEditing class.

The editor content traversal can be a challenging process. The presented method is sufficient when there is relatively little content. Otherwise, a WeakMap will be a better option.

The CSS file contains the editor and content styles. Consequentially, you do not need to import styles into your JavaScript file.

The script tag loads the editor from the CDN. It exposes the global variable CKEDITOR. You can use it in your project to access the editor class and plugins. That is why you must change the import statements to destructuring in the JavaScript files:
