Frequently asked questions

Under which licenses are CKEditor 4 and CKEditor 5 available?

CKEditor 4 and CKEditor 5 are available under an Open Source license as well as a commercial license.

CKEditor 4 is distributed under three copyleft Open Source license options: GPL, LGPL and MPL.

CKEditor 5 is distributed under a GPL 2+ copyleft license. If you are running a project with an OSS license incompatible with GPL 2+, please contact us and we will be happy to support it with a free CKEditor 5 license.

As for commercial licensing, CKSource grants both term-based and perpetual licenses depending on the customer software-specific usage scenario and needs.

If you are working on a SaaS project, creating a commercial application or just need more flexibility, you can purchase a commercial license that allows special license terms and dedicated support.

What are the benefits of being commercially licensed for CKEditor?

While on active license our customers receive usage rights to the editor, a dedicated direct support channel and in case of an OEM license (on-premise and SaaS software solutions) also distribution rights.

What is monthly active user (MAU)?

Monthly Active User is a unique person that used our software at least once during a given billing period.

I am using CKEditor in my SaaS project. My user base includes a high number of freemium users. How would this affect my MAUs count?

If your project is SaaS, a freemium user does not count as a MAU (monthly active user).

What happens if I exceed my monthly active user allowance?

If you exceed your monthly active user allowance:

What is a product family?

A product family cannot be treated as one product even under one product platform. Each product within the product family supports your customers in a different area of the business and shall be licensed separately. If you wish to embed the editor in a product family solution, you should contact us.

Is it possible to use a different licensing metric than the number of users?

We will be happy to discuss a suitable solution on a case-by-case basis in the Flexible plan.

What is the number of support requests per month?

The number of support requests per month is the total monthly allowance of support requests for the product bundle you purchased. The product bundle means any additional products you purchased with CKEditor (e.g. CKEditor and CKFinder, Accessibility Checker or CKEditor and Easy Image, etc.).

If you purchased CKEditor as a stand-alone product, the number of support requests per month refers only to the editor support.

Is annual payment available for subscription-based licenses?

Annual payment can be requested under the Flexible plan.

What is the minimum length of subscription-based license agreements?

The minimum length of subscription-based license agreements for CKEditor, CKFinder and Accessibility Checker is 12 months. However, you have the right to cancel your subscription-based license within 30 (thirty) days after the purchase date with no refunds available for the first month of subscription.

In case of CKEditor, CKFinder or Accessibility Checker subscription license cancellation before the minimum 12 month period, all rights to use and the License granted to the Customer shall expire and the Customer is obliged to discontinue the use of the Software by:

  • immediately discontinuing distribution of the Software embedded in the Product,
  • immediately discontinuing providing access to the Software through the user interface of Internal Application,
  • immediately stopping its clients to use the Software.

The minimum length of subscription-based license agreements for Easy Image is 1 (one) month.

I am currently using CKEditor 4 in my project but want to migrate to CKEditor 5. Do I need to purchase a new license?

You do not need to purchase a new subscription when migrating to CKEditor 5 if:

  • you are on an active CKEditor 4 subscription,
  • you purchased the CKEditor 4 perpetual license and your license is renewed on a yearly basis.

What is Developer?

A Developer is an employee or individual contractor designated by you to perform development activities (coding, configuring, code testing) with our products or to receive ongoing technical support.
