Is there a config for requiring input?

Is there a config or easy way to require a user to enter text into the editor before they can submit the form? For example, I'd like a validation event to occur when they click the submit button that checks to see if they entered any text in the textarea. If they didn't enter any text, then a javascript warning alerts the user to enter text before they can submit the form.
