Why spans with display:none?

Some of my users using fckeditor 2.5.1 are reporting disappearing content. It shows when editing but not on the published content. When I check the content, I noticed one or more spans with a style of display:none. Why is that happening, and is it a bug that should be fixed. If not a bug, how do I correct that behavior?
