Using CKEDITOR source for debugging...

So I'm trying to track down a problems using CKEDITOR. We have a custom "link" dialog, and for some of our clients, it is working, but not for others (when they click on the "link" icon, the browser window freezes up) I finally came to having to download the CKEDITOR source so I could track into it and figure out the problem.

But, I am having trouble getting the source version to work. I set up to use the correct skin, and commented out some code (custom templates) in ckeditor_extensions/gui.js, but now it does nothing. There are no error messages in the console, but the textarea that normally gets replaced with an editor window now is just a white box. Everything looks right... any help on getting ckeditor to work from the full source?
