If your CSS is referenced properly, you can use the "full HTML" version of the editor and include CSS links; that's what I've been using. I never even touched fck_editorarea.css.
Maybe I havent made myself clear.... In the editor screen of fckeditor in my CMS I want to be able to see the styles after I apply them in source mode.
Im actually not fussed with the dropdowns etc.. I just want it to display in the editor window correctly matching the display on my site if you follow me?
Let me break this down. What this is saying is, if the parent document that calls the editor has the variable bFCKEditorCSS set to true use the kbd_editorarea.css file otherwise use the default system file KaboodleDefaultEditorArea.css.
The method I actually use seeks many css files depending on user preferences and ultimately defaults to the FCK css file default if all else are not found. I also use this method for the editors FCKConfig.StylesXmlPath and the FCKConfig.TemplatesXmlPath as well. The reason for this is so that users can define their own css and xml at will. Hope this points you in the right direction.
By the way, this can (should) be defined outside of the default fckconfig.js file (read FCKConfig.CustomConfigurationsPath), but one step at a time.

You must have to tell it where your css is.. no?

:
If your page is coded this way fck should find it automatically.

Re: Use my websites css in the editor window?
I'm still learning fck myself but I think what you are asking would require that you update the editor drop downs with your own styles. I have not tried this myself but there are instructions for this here: http://docs.fckeditor.net/FCKeditor_2.x/Developers_Guide/Configuration/Styles

Re: Use my websites css in the editor window?
OK. This might be a bit techie but in fckconfig.js try:
FCKConfig.EditorAreaCSS = (window.parent.bFCKEditorCSS) ? 'http://' + location.hostname + '/ftproot/kbd_editorarea.css' : FCKConfig.BasePath + 'plugins/kaboodle/styles/KaboodleDefaultEditorArea.css'
