Starting editor with text, how can I do it?

I'm having a problem with the editor breaking (read: not showing up) if I try and start with a lot of text in it. If it only takes up one line, it seems to work fine. However, when I try and do it with a page of info the editor just doesn't show up. I really need this funtionality so users can edit news once its been posted.
