Square Bracket and Numbers

I need to be able to use square brackets and numbers to show sources in an academic application, e.g. Brown & Smith [1985]. But everytime I save, the opening square bracket and the numbers are converted to an undisplayable character shown as a square box. What can I do to prevent this?

Here, apparently this does not happen (because I saved this as a draft and it comes back correctly when viewing). I am using version 2.5.1

This is still happening in Version 2.6 on my site, but not here e.g., [1990]. What can possibly make this difference? I have customized my toolbar and added a custom style, but nothing else has been changed.

Check what happens if instead of using FCKeditor you use a plain textarea to edit the content in your site.

OK, good idea. Tried it and the data is not changed, so when I enter [1990] that is what is saved (and what can be later retrieved from the database). I have looked to see if I am messing with the contents when I save it to the database, but cannot find any reference to square brackets in my code (can't find anything where I change what I get back from FCKeditor at all) .

Hello Alfonso,

Sorry for the delay in replying; yesterday I did not have a demo site, today I do. But in setting it up and making sure that the problem still existed I stumbled across where the problem is -- and it was my own fault, not fckeditor's.

Thank you for taking an interest in this problem -- just having to prepare and explain it clearly was what I needed to examine more closely what I thought I understood completely.
