Plugin Development: how to check selected

Currently I am doing some development and testing with plugin development and would like to know the following.

How can I check if someone has selected text within the WYSIWYG editor.

Furthermore how can I close the plugin window if someone did not selected text in the WYSIWYG editor.

Hope to hear something from other people who developed plugins...
