Pipe Characters disappearing on edit

I've got a problem where content containing pipe characters (|) is entered into the fckeditor and saved successfully in a db. When I go back in to edit the content using the same fckeditor, the pipe characters are no longer showing up even though I have confirmed they are in the content in the db. Has anyone else encountered this problem before or have a solution?
