Maximum length for text in editor?

We've found that the editor cuts off the amount of text entered to about 4,000 characters even though our SQL Server field is defined as a varchar(8000). Is there a limit to the number of characters for the editor? I can't find any reference to the maximum. Or is there a config parm that needs to be set?
