Inserting text at cursor location

I have several situations where I would like to be able to click a button and insert (dynamic) text at the current cursor location, and can't figure out where to start. For example, we want to maintain a photo database. When a photo is required, we'd like to put the cursor in a specific location in the editor, then automatically insert tags for a photo by selecting it from a list. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks! We're using the ASP.Net FCKeditor control.
