I need a more or less wysiwyg editor I can use offline to create rather long wiki pages. I'm using Mediawiki. The documents are long, not complex, and have to be prepared offline.
Right now I'm just using a text editor (gedit or kate) with highlighting. Problem is, when I'm trying to concentrate on content, it's very distracting to have all the plaintext formatting in the way.
I have two problems with fckeditor. One is Really Dumb : How do I use it just locally, offline, on my own computer? I installed the editor (+ dependencies) via synaptic. I have Firefox 3. I should be able to run it, but nowhere does it say how to start it! Only how to use it.
The editor is in /usr/share/fckeditor/ but the files themselves only have read-write permission (owner, which is root) or read permissions (everyone else). Do the .php or .py files need to be executable?
Two: Am I barking up the wrong tree? What I really want is a wysiwyg offline editor for Mediawiki. Is there such a thing?

Re: How do I use fckeditor offline??
It is not meant to operate that way, you could do it if you set up a local web server on your machine. but it would be easier to use something like this:
http://kompozer.net/

Re: How do I use fckeditor offline??
I installed Kompozer and started looking around. I see previews for html, but I don't see anything for wiki formatting. Ah well. Maybe in the next release. I put in a feature request
