Hello,
I have used online editors before, but after two days of reading the "doumentation" and looking at the sample files - I have not a clue how this can be used to edit webpages online.
As I see by the samples, it seems that anytime someone brings up a page online - the editor is always present - and anyone can make changes. How is this product configured so that the normal page is seen online - and then only the page "owner" can bring the editor into it for editing?
This may seem to be a stupid question - but nowhere I have looked does this seem to be explained. I have used "HTML AREA" editor for sometime - and I'd love to see if this is even better.
Thanks for any help on this......

RE: How can this editor be used to edit onlin
Such functionality as you are talking about is the job of a Content Management System (CMS). The CMS would incorporate the FCKEditor whilst providing the framework for retrieving and storing the content on a file system or database.
It isn't (and should never be) the job of editors like FCK to decide how you want to structure and store your content, just to provide the interface to edit the HTML portions of it.

RE: How can this editor be used to edit online
I must admit I am a bit confused though. Why would anyone have such an editor online to edit their webpages, when everyone else looking at the page could also edit it?
The program I have been using "HtmlArea" shows a normal webpage to the visitor - then by entering a username and password - the "owner" of the page can make any changes (updates) to the page he wishes and have it instantly available. Sort of like a CMS system, I suppose. HtmlArea uses a toolbar very similar to FCKeditor to make the changes.
Sorry if I lack some understanding in the purpose of FCKeditor - but I just don't see why one would allow just anyone to edit their website pages.
Anyway, thank you for the kindness of taking your time to respond.
With all best wishes...
Don

When I say "CMS", it certainly does not have to be very complicated, and could consist of just a password protected page that loads HTML into the editor from a disk file, and saves it back again.
Maybe someone could provide something similar for FCKEditor? Or provide a list of existing CMS's that already integrate it?
Cheers

RE: How can this editor be used to edit onlin
In fact since the HTMLArea project is now dead, the web site is now "a directory of browser based wysiwyg editor components for use in CMS (content management software) and other web software."
http://www.htmlarea.com
They split the products in their directory into two categories:
1. WYSIWYG Editors (79 products)
"These WYWISYG editors are web software components for use in forms and web software as an alternative to plain <textarea> fields."
2. Web Content Management (18 products)
Web software with built-in WYSIWYG editors to update live web pages.
That explains the difference better than I can - FCK is in category 1 (on page 3).
Maybe you could look at some of the products in category 2.

Hope that makes some sense

Wow!
Thank you Ben and Lucas for your input. I have learned a lot!
Although the website at HtmlArea no longer offers that product (free) the code is still available - if you care to take a look. There was a fellow by the name of Luis (I think) that worked over the original code and produced a very feature filled editor - similar to FCKeditor - but one that did what I was trying to explain earlier. Edit any page right on line and have it immediately posted. You can still see it and get the code at:
http://www.webstationone.com/test/htmlarea/
Several years ago I "simplifed" the code somewhat for the use of some of my clients. (I build websites) Those who use it are more than thrilled with it. Should you care to see it, I placed a simple working demo of it here:
http://www.nitestarrs.com/demo.cgi?p=1
Code for that one is available also.
Thanks again fellows for your input. I was hoping to find something better than what I already had without going to a full blown CMS for my clients. But I am happy with what I have.....
Best regards to you both!
