Forcing auto-check for new versions b4 errng?

I'm sure it's in these here forums somwhere, and I'll dig until I find it, but I'm gonna pause to ask:

Is is possible to toggle on something in the vein of an auto-check/_and_/auto-compare for new versions before erroring?

BG/I'm dicking around with customizing toolbars/sets now; not sure but guess similar things play out elsewise.
