'Edit' button to enable and disable the use of CKEditor

Hello,

Apologies if this has been asked before, but searching for the common terms for this question leads me to a lot of unrelated topics.

We would like to be able to have an 'edit' button or icon on our application that will enable/disable editing functionality through CKEditor on certain fields or on the page.  We would prefer not to have the edit functionality always available and confusing users who aren't on a page to edit the page.

How can we enable this, or set up CKEditor to allow for this type of functionality?
