Changing userfile default directory path for upload

When a user wants to upload a file to the server, that file is placed in the "userfiles" directory which is placed in the root directory by default. Is there anyway to change a path or setting so that the "userfile" will be created in a sub folder? Also in which files are there references to the "userfile" directory so those can be altered to reference the new location of the "userfile" directory?
