timeout when downloading large files

When downloading an mpg of 37Mb i see a download progress indication,but afer some time the progress bar just freezes ... although it still downloads: after some time the file indeed is downloaded. Looks like only the browser GUI stops working.

Every now and then I even get this error:

FastCGI Error
The FastCGI Handler was unable to process the request.

HTTP Error 500 - Server Error.

I'm Gert's colleague. I'm assuming that this is caused by the php cgi generating a timeout. Since upping the timeout limit isn't really an option for us (there could be files in there that are well above several 100's of MB's, and some of our clients have slow internet connections), I was wondering if it is somehow possible to just turn off the current way file downloads are handled (through a php script), and just show the file path in the links?
