png thumbnail transparency

Hi,
I've got a query regarding transparency with png thumbnails. I tried the fix found at

however, I've found it works on second copies of files uploaded, not the original upload. As Ben says himself "Looks like my fix does not work properly, sorry."

Is this a known issue, is it likely to be fixed?

Any assistance much appreciated.
