URGENT: Double click to open a file

From what I can tell the only way to open a file is to right click when hovering over the file and then pick open from the context sensitive menu.  What do I need to do to enable double clicking as another way to open a file.  I need this to work with all file types: .docx, .pdf, .jpg, .gif, etc...
