Porting fckeditor's Java Connector to CKFinder

I'm working on porting fckeditor's Java Connector to CKFinder. I'm using the PHP CKFinder connector as a guide since I know php fairly well.

I'm basing all my code off of the fsckeditor's Java Connector since the basic idea is the same. Progress is going pretty slow just because I don't have a tremendous amount of free time and I'm new to Maven. Where is the best place to ask questions? Is there a CKFinder connector/dev IRC channel?

Also, I'm not sure how to deal with the licensing. Since it's a derived work from fckeditor's Java code then it has to be GPL2 but what about this line "Copyright (C) 2003-2008 Frederico Caldeira Knabben". Do I add my own copyright beneath it or do i replace Frederico's with my own? Finally, what to the dates mean on a copyright notice? Does the "2003-2008" specify how long the copyright is valid? I've contributed to open source projects before but mostly documentation and examples never actual licensed code.
