Is there a plugin or a way to configure ckFinder to use amazon s3 buckets? I have read past posts of people asking the same question and the response (back in 2013) was "they were rewriting ckfinder". But there has been no updates!

Not currently. CKFinder 3.x
Not currently. CKFinder 3.x will have that ability but it's not out yet. It should be ready by the end of summer.

Any updates on CKFinder 3.x release? We are at the end of summer and I would prefer to have S3 support built in rather than trying to create my own.
