How to get file path, from thumbnail path?

Imagine that the thumbnail path is:

http://domain/files/thumbs/images/cars/bmw.png

I want a function (server-side) to get this URL, and return the image path corresponding to this thumbnail. Is there such a function? Is there a general formula, so that I can write this function myself?
