Compressed Files

Is it possible to modify the compressed files once we actually purchase the ckfinder? We currently use the browser in fckeditor, however we made a lot of modifications so we could upload to ftp sites instead of the local server. We would like to do this with ckfinder as well but I want to make sure we can modify the core files before we purchase.
