Toolbar items disabled

I know this question must have been asked, but I can't seem to find anything. When I first bring up the editor various items on the toolbar are disabled (Link and Unlink for example). And when I go to Source view even more are disabled (this I can understand)....these items are re-enabled, but those that are initially disabled are never enabled. Could someone please point me in the direction I need to go?? How do I get these items enabled?

Those, if they work the way I think they do, become 'alive' when you select text, or enter something into the iframe.

See, that seems to happen mostly in IE, as firefox doesn't seem to pay attn. to weather or not you have text selected when you click the 'link' button.

Try it and see. If I'm wrong, well then, the wether is KEWL... alll rainy-like...
