As a speed imrovement, I think the images used for the buttons should use CSS positioning and one image to make it all much faster. For example, this was done for HTMLArea (when forked to Xinha):

It will also render all existing skins unusable.
It loads pretty fast after the images are cached the first time, so personally I don't think it's worth it at this stage (maybe in a future version)

I've been think a lot about it since version RC3. I'm ready to implement it, but I don't want to make such a big change in the editor for the final version (the next one).
After that we could think about it. It would be nice.
