Actually Safari 1.3/2.0 "introduced" editing support on Safari. Unfortunately it doesn't mean it was good enough to be usable. FCKeditor will be declared compatible with the first Safari version with which it will be completely compatible.
We are still working for the compatibility, but actually some work is needed from the WebKit team to make it possible to propose a professional, and mainly stable, editor for their browser. Other browser claiming Safari support are known for their buggy support of it, but I have to confirm that the latest builds of WebKit are providing very good results.
Thank you for the reply. Would it be possible to create a rich text editor with less features than FCKEditor that is compatible with Safari 1.3? Or do the problems with WebKit make it so that no rich text editor will be stable?
The reason I ask it because even if a version of FCKEditor is released for today's newest Safari then the new version of FCKEditor will not be usable for a couple more years in many web pages since users are still using Safari 1.3 and will until they stop using OS X 10.3.
Usually a release of Safari 2.0.x comes together with a version 1.3.x, both implementing the latest WebKit. So, as soon a we have compatibility with a new version of the 2.0.x family, I believe compatibility with that same 1.3.x version will be automatic.
No promises... actually we must wait the compatibility to come, to be able to check it.
