PHP custom var in filemanager

How do you creat your own variables to pass to the filebrowser. I am using PHP 5. I have tried adding to the $Link, $Html & seting cookie. Nothing works, editor/filemanager/connector/php/config.php does not read standard $var's, $_COOKIE['var'], $_POST['var'] or any other var.
