I hope this project goes well and I wish it all the best. Comments:
1. there are 41 developers listed on the summary page. That's a lot.
2. there seem to be 20 or 30 showstopper bugs, and the bugs are not being fixed very quickly. RC2 usually means the software is in a final test phase for final tweaking, and feature complete.
3. you could leverage the the 41 developers better, plus all the other people that would want to help, by releasing more information on how you are building the compressed javascript. Or provide more introduction to the design of the control, or document the installation a lot better.

RE: Meaning of RC2
btw I can't find the 30+ developers you are talking about...
RE: Meaning of RC2
Makefiles have been written by the community and if you look through the forum you will find them, ok these weren't provided by the author as you identified sharing the development is a good idea.
Until a product reaches final it is not considered viable for production use anyway, so what difference does a name make, and bugs are to be expected in a pre final release.
The latest RC supports plugins so if anyone else wishes to contribute extra functionallity they could.
As for info on development how things fit together etc, most questions in the forum get answered, failing that try asking Fred nicely.
If you took the time to look at the developer list you would find that most of the people in there are people who have kindly translated the editor into other languages. (i count 4 developers inc Fred)
RE: Meaning of RC2
I've been trying desperately to understand what's going on with the release candidates in order to plan development and release of my application.
But I've not understood until looking at the roadmap (must have missed the link all these months) that the release candidates are far from "release candidates". They are more like beta releases, since features are still being added.
I know it's silly to worry much about wording, but in this case, it's pretty significant.
Along these lines, I know Fred is probably knee deep in work right now, but I'd personally find it a significant to have someone on the dev team take a few minutes to address some of the major issues in the forums. People (myself included) have been asking about certain problems for months with little resolution. Things like how to change the image upload path to go outside the FCKeditor directory.
Sorry if this sounds overly negative. I really appreciate all the work that has been done here!

RE: Meaning of RC2
Hello Guys,
I really appreciate your interest in the project and all your comments are much welcome. It is important to know about your thoughts, in this way the development can go in the right direction.
Ill try to explain some points:
1. Actually just a few developers work in the project. The Javascript part, the heart of the editor, is completely written by me (of course helped by the great community that grew up around the project). We have a lot of translators (the editor is available on more than 30 languages) and all them are part of the team. For a better understanding of it:
http://www.fckeditor.net/developers/
2. I decided to stop adding new features at version 2.0 RC1. But, I heard many people looking for the features available on version 1.6, so I started working on this important upgrade to be able to have a really complete 2.0 version. More info about the development status can be found here:
http://www.fckeditor.net/roadmap/
3. Information about compressing the source files is already available in the (poor) editor docs. Look for Scripts Compression at the _docs folder. Today I have to make a choice: coding or documenting. I think that, until a stable version is not available, coding will be my priority.
4. Today, I have to confirm, we have bugs in the editor. The RC2 version has one (I sad one) bug that is a big problem (editing stops when switching views when the startup content is empty). Version RC3 will bring important bug fixing (and why not, new features). After that Ill be working on bug fixing only.
5. Many bugs come from the File Manager. Actually, the editor brings a sample File Manager. FCKeditor is not intended to be a File Manager, but an online editor. You can always develop your custom solutions and easily integrate it. In any case, we want to provide a good and stable solution for it. This is why mcukstorm is joining the team (surprise!!!). He did a good job on his custom implementation and now hes becoming the official developer of the File Manager. (hey mcukstorm I know I have to send you some docs about it ). The new File Manager will be published with version 2.0 FC (Final Candidate).
6. Every day I receive hundreds of messages. As you may know, people pay for e-mail support (actually people want to support the project with it), so to be right with them, I usually dont answer all messages. I hope you can understand it.
7. Unfortunately I cant work full time in the project because, as everybody, I need some money to live. For now, I have just a few donations (I really appreciate it), but are not enough to support the development. In any case, Im doing my best to provide good software to everybody. Many people told me to publish a paid version of it, but it is against the base idea of the project to always be open source.
I hope I could give a better overview of the project to all you. Stay in touch version RC3 will be a really nice thing.
Thanks again to all the Community,
FredCK

RE: Meaning of RC2
using one of the best online editors available today.
Many thanks to the Developers
Fawzi
PS. By the way, I am using FCKeditor RC2, which was very simple to install, and almost no problems using it.
RE: Meaning of RC2
Thanks for the great explination of what RC2 means. My tech folks thought it was a production version. FCKEditor is a really great editor, especially for us who have limited knowledge of HTML, etc.
I previously had a question on upward compatibility but I see from your roadmap that the final production version for V2.0 will have all the functionality of V1.6 (Re: your Point 2)
RE: Meaning of RC2
Like everyone else says, keep up the good work. Great news on adding a manager for the File Manager... thats quite a can of worms but, for me at least, its critical for the product. Users want to be able to upload files inline with their pages and their satisfaction with v1.6's features in this regard was dramatically positive.
Personally I'm just going to sit and wait for 2.0. I'll keep playing with the RC's, but I can wait for cross-browser compatibility and all the other stuff. Especially when I know its going to be a big reward when the wait is over.
Thanks again,
RE: Meaning of RC2
Couldn't it mean Request for Comments in our case..?
