How To Create A Button That Inserts A Custom Tag

Hi there. Can someone point me in the right direction on how to create a new custom button that inserts a piece a code at the cursor location. I basically want to add a <more> or [more] tag to the source code when the button is clicked. I plan to use this to break the content into two sections if used.
