HTMLArea

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone here has also had experience with HTMLArea, specifically the v3.0 which is currently in RC status.

(Sorry for mentioning another competing product here, but it's all open source right!)

I'm about to integrate either fckEditor or HtmlArea and was interested in peoples opinions on which is the more reliable & stable.

I find fckeditor easyer to work with, I cannot say exactly why, maybe because dialogs are better? consider URL/link dialog for example.

Speaking of competing product, I would like to see in fckeditor the possibility of restricting the user if needed to some controls in a customizable way, ie. permit image insertion within paragraphs and not within itemized lists... things possible in bitflux editor (mozilla only)

It’s not fair to even compare them.
FCK has a very unique dialogs, file structure, compatibility, support for many server-side languages (PHP, CFM, ASP.NET, JSP), multi human languages support, ease of use, ease of customization.
I went through many editors before FCK. I believe FCK is what I was looking for.
I would love to see a competing product to FCK, but it can't be HTMLArea.

Yes I like FCK very much and it seems more polished than HTMLArea - especially the latest RC1!

The development of HTMLArea also seems very fragmented and the latest release has been in RC1 for 10 months!

I'm interested in this comment - have you had bad experiences with HTMLArea?

The developer of HTMLarea does not seem to want to maintain it anymore. However HTMLareas major problem is memory leak, it uses up about 4MB on the client every time you open the editor, so if someone edits 10 pages, thats 40MB. You have to restart browser to clear it.

There dosen't appear to be any decent open source compeition, wysiwygpro.com is probably the best other one out there.

Yeah I looked at wysiwygpro and it is *very* good ... but it's all wrapped in php and not usable on any other platform.

A fairly stupid approach for a client side application if you ask me ... !

I'll stick with fck I think.

I have HTMLArea 3 rc, FCK 1 and FCK2 in place in various projects. I am converting everything right now to FCK2.

HtmlArea has some quirky popup rendering and refreshes. It feels less responsive. Nice thing about it is the support for table-cell merging. Other than that, FCK has it hands down.

I just converted a bunch of sites from the old htmlArea to FCK 2.0 RC1 ... it works great... much nicer than htmlArea.

FCK is better because the dialogs are a lot better - in particular, the image and link dialogs.

I use HTMLArea because there is a plugin for phpMyEdit.

Can anyone share their experience using FCK with phpMyEdit?
