Just a suggestion (not sure if its available with phpBB or not) but why not have the ability to mark a thread as "resolved" as part of the support forum?
This would make it easier for mods and the community to help out with support without having to sift through a pile of resolved threads. Which I guess in turn could free up the likes of Fred and alfonso to help with the more technical questions?
Just a thought, may have been raised before?
