simplifying upload

Hi,
I would like to be able to simplify the process of uploading files.
What I would like to do is remove the 'browse server' step.
What I mean is, the user browses their local machine, selects the file they want to upload and the file gets uploaded as normal. On success, the upload dialogue is closed and the uploaded file is now displayed within the text area.
Does anyone know if such a thing is possible 'out of the box'? Or am I looking at some serious hacking?
