popout modal mode?

I thought I saw a demo on the demo page once upon a time that did this. There were a lot more demos then.

Is there any easy way to make have CKEditor kind of do this for a tiny box:

Basically the input area is very tiny as it's in a large grid. There isn't room for the editor to show up in its box. I googled for a solution but came up short. Is there a simple method to implement CKEditor to open up in a modal box when a tiny input field is clicked?
