how to create a new line in a table cell using ckeditor?

Need to set up a table with three columns and line breaks in the text that's in each data cell. So far, returns don't work nor do tabs. Anyone know how to do this? Can I edit something in ckeditor to make it work? I'd rather not have to make multiple rows just to accomplish this as it would be maddening for my client down the road to deal with that. Thanks.
