The nice thing about Tango is that they have well described their standards. You have a complete iconographic definition there, which makes things consistent and standardized.
In the other hand, let's always keep in mind our usability requirements. I love Open Source and I believe on it, but people out there, those who will be using V3, may not really care about it. They just want a good editor. So, Tango is good if it support their needs, not our ideologies.
Let's give it a try when working on the UI design of V3, definitely.
