please write me which version of joomla and component do you use ?
EDIT:
I have tested this issue with latest component version for Joomla 1.5 and Joomla 1.6 and it looks ok for me.

Sorry I had this problem with a custom made cms, not with joomla. It's not an editor bug or problem, I wanted to have relative image path when I saw them live on site and an image absolute path in backend, because administrator area has it's own folder. I solved this problem with php code. This problem was in Wordpress 2.x too. If you wanted to swith from a domain name to other, I had to modify all images paths from database.
