Permissions uploading files

I am using 3.3.1
When I try to upload an image I get
joomla it was not possible to complete the request due to file system permission restrictions
unless the folder permission is at 777

Joomla's media manager does not require this -755 is sufficient.

Id rather not set this folder to 777
anything I can do?
