Further beating the head against the wall seems to have helped. I had used one of the samples as a template and 'simply' named my textarea box "ckeditor". When I removed that and replaced it with the proper 'CKEDITOR.replace' statement as shown in the integration section of the Dev guide, it seems to work. Doh!
