I have modified the existing specialCharacter plugin to be able to display all unicode characters (or most of them). Feel free to use it - but let me know if you find a bug.
The en.js language package is NOT finished - this requires quite som work - but I will post new versions as they come along and bugs are fixed...
This is not thoroughly tested - so bugs will most certainly appear...
In order for it to work unzip it to your plugins folder: web/_source/plugins/...
In your CKEditor add the following line:
And remember to add a button to your toolbar:
Please drop a note of what you think...

While I don't currently have a use for this, I just wanted to thank you for your contribution Helmø
Re: New alternativ SpecialCharacter plugin
Hi again,
I have some few corrections for the symbol plugin.
- The en.js has been updated - fixed some more entries and removed a lot of doubles
- Some corrections have been made so it is more compatible with IE 9
- It has been tested and is working in FF 4.0, Chrome 11 and IE 9
@mokargas - Thank you for your support

Here is a screen dump of how the symbol dialog looks like:

Re: New alternativ SpecialCharacter plugin
sorts the symbol range list (names of the symbol ranges) in the comboBox alphabetically (instead of chronologically according to Unicode hex range which is the default)
defines the symbol range to start displaying once the dialog is opened. In the above case the Latin Extended-B will be displayed. If defaultSymbolRange is undefined then "Basic Latin" will be used. If a value is defined but cannot be found in the list then the first index in the comboBox will be used
I will add the symbol plugin to the plugins forum - just posted it here for consistency...

Symbols replaced with ? in database
Would love to use this but can not get the symbols to save properly in my MySQL database (CHARACTER SET utf8 collate utf8_unicode_ci). When I add a special character (Hawaiian vowel with macron) using Select Symbol plugin, it is replaced by a "?" in the database. This is not the case with other special characters I add using the Select Special Character plugin. I'm working with Coldfusion (which uses utf-8 as it's default) and I have include <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" /> in my .cfm (instead of .html) pages. I'm at a loss (and have lost many hours trying to figure this out.) Anyone have ideas or suggestions? Thanks! P.S. I must admit, I'm a experienced wildlife biologist but I'm a only a novice in this arena.
