Re: Need Character limit solution
So I came up with a radically different idea, which I am sure (or at least I hope) is not particularly original. And that is to feed to the page a parameter that governs the total area in pixels squared allowed to a block of html generated by the editor. Then, whenever you wish to check, feed the html from the editor into a div of a fixed width, check its height, and if the height is greater than the area divided by the width (with, of course, the appropriate rounding, and with perhaps some sort of percentage tolerance given subtle rendering differences among browsers), do something -- like don't submit, or advise the user that "the text" is too long, or both, or -- Heaven knows what would be best for you.
This dissolves all issues concerning the amount of text devoted to html and the length of what will render as text. Plus it renders images to get their actual displacement. Solves all manner of questions which are lurking in the future for those intrepid souls who would otherwise attempt a character count.
Works great.
