Insert Table

Actually I want to do something like that in v3.0 too. After all, this is pretty much a standard feature in traditional word processors (MS Word, OOo Writer, etc.), and it's not too hard to do in JavaScript.

This looks like a nice thing, and we can definitely consider it as the default set. We could group all object insertion things under a single button: Image, Flash, Horizontal Line, Page Break, etc...

Then, being V3 plugin based, it would be easy to have the same things as separated buttons, just like we have today.

I have been working on a project to integrate the FCKeditor into DokuWiki and wrote a plugin that handles many of the requirements of tables. You can find it at:

It's not as elegant as the screen shots, but it is useful.

Those properties are a step back in the web.
We are in 2008, you are supposed to use CSS to separate content and presentation, so you should offer options to select a table style, not to paint each table and cell.

I'm sorry you have taken such a stance. I have a community of over 30,000 depending on a website handling 130 clubs. Each club has unique needs and design preferences. Their tables have a WIDE variety of needs and it is not conducive to require them to select from a fixed set of options for table styles.

It is shortsighted to reject the needs of the audience to limit this product to only a segment of users. I would invite those who contribute to this editor to find a process of meeting the needs of those who need a relatively small modification.

Another option would be to provide alternatives to those who would use this design. Perhaps a skilled programmer out there could produce these alternatives for those of us who could benefit from them.

CSS is not a panacea, nor was it ever meant to be. Designs that achieve the customer objectives leads me to ask for assistance. There are times when the user wants/needs to provide tables having colored backgrounds. I hope I didn't upset the applecart here. I'm simply attempting to meet the needs of my community.

i'd rather have an editor like google docs than a full feature, can-do-everything editor with 20 checkboxes configuration windows... there's a reason why google docs/sites is so successful and why they decided on high usability and a reduced feature set.

but you are right, some people want a full-featured editor with every possible option. but imho this is what plugins are for... provide a rock-solid core and if you want more you can always try to get some developers together to create a more advanced plugin.

Thanks for your insight. I have no objection to a full feature plug-in for tables. Could you suggest somewhere to look for this, please?
