Hierarchical numbered headings/sections

Hello,
is there a way to create an hierarchical numbered list für chapters and subchapters?
it should look like this:
1. section 1
1.1 Subsection 1.1
1.1.1 Subsubsection 1.1.1

No, this isn't a feature of HTML/CSS currently. I'm sure you could get creative with a little javascript or something though. Only other way to do it would be to manually number them (I.E. use UL and turn off bullets)
