Editor layout "messed up" in IE8

I've viewed the samples included in the installation and as it turns out, the editor interface appears normally nin IE8 so obviously this is a problem involving my specific installation though I have no idea where to start looking.

I've re-edited the config.js file again and see that IE does display the changes I've made, but still has the missing button images problem.
