I planned to use ckeditor on a client site (straight html, not wordpress or any other cms). Before doing so, I wanted to test it out. Installed it at mydevboxx.com/ckeditor as a test. The basic install doesn't work, with most of the toolbar buttons grayed out (and those that are not grayed out don't actually do anything).
The sample ckeditor url that ckeditor suggests as a test url is at http://mydevboxx.com/ckeditor/samples/replacebyclass.html (notice how the buttons are either grayed out or just don't work).
Another sample that I created myself is at http://mydevboxx.com/testedit2.html. Same situation.
Any ideas? I've scoured the documentation, but I must be missing something.
You could have some missing
I'm getting this error in developer tools:
Uncaught ReferenceError: jQuery is not defined
You seem to need the jQuery library for something and it's missing.

Ok...so it doesn't come with the install? Where should the reference to it be? Keep in mind that this is just the install I downloaded from here, and the sample url isn't working. So, it's not like I removed anything. But I can certainly install the library and call it as needed.
Ok, just tried it. That works! Added the call to Google's hosted version and voila!
Why isn't that in the sample that gets downloaded? That's crazy! Well, anyway, working now. Thanks!
CKEditor itself doesn't need
CKEditor itself doesn't need jQuery, but it seems that you have added a bunch of additional third party plugins and at least one of them uses jQuery and doesn't take care to automatically load it if it isn't ready (or use the CKEditor API that in most of the cases takes care of everything that people do with jQuery)
You should review if you need all the plugins that you have selected and most important: don't use the "big and slow" but the compiled version generated with CKBuilder.

Hmmm, I think I just used the "full" version. Didn't realize that came with third party plugins. I did use the big and slow though. Not sure why I chose that one. I think I was just being contrary that day and decided slow was better than fast. Interesting.
You might have checked the
You might have checked the "full" version, but while browsing the options you might have added other plugins and one of the is the culprit of your problems.
It's easy to make a mistake when you use something new for the first time.
