This download supports several code languages, but the default is set to asp. If you use PHP, you must first change the language used in the fckconfig.js file, and then you must go the the config.php in the FCK editor directory. It burried way down in a sub directory, but the javascript will tell you where it is when you try to use the image browser.
I found a SOLUTION and the reason why we get all these javascript and XML errors in the filemanager in FCKEditor....
My problems began when my PHP was upgraded on our servers to PHP5... every version. The problem was that the ISP had to keep PHP5 going with a lot of older PHP4 apps... so to minimize problems in php.ini they set
zend.ze1_compatibility_mode ------- ON
Solution: Go to line 19, right after session_start(); in ...FCKeditor/editor/filemanager/connectors/php/config.php and add this line to turn off ZEND Compatibility
ini_set('zend.ze1_compatibility_mode','Off');
End of "object required" errors in javascript AND in XML errors when you upload a file.
To test to see if your php.ini sets zend.ze1_compatibility_mode On, use phpinfo(); in a file and look at the config. Man, I am SO GLAD to find this. The clue by the way was in the XML output....

This is still the same error as the 500 error.
