CKSource at Large Scale Drupal in Prague

Last week the CKSource team made a presentation at the closed Large Scale Drupal (LSD) event in Prague before taking part in the main DrupalCon activities. The event brought together some of the biggest companies currently using the popular CMS. The meeting was a great success as it gave attendees a chance to share ideas about WYSIWYG editing in Drupal. Here’s a summary of what happened.
# CKSource and Drupal
First, we’d like to thank some of the companies that were in attendance. The presence of Pfizer, Disney, NBC, and of course Acquia, made the entire meeting that much more memorable. They reinforced the fact that Drupal is the leading CMS on the market with a lot of untapped potential.
After being introduced by Dries Buytaert (Drupal founder) and Michael Meyers (VP of Large Scale Drupal), CKEditor project lead at CKSource, Frederico Knabben, explained why Drupal chose CKEditor. He elaborated the various challenges WYSIWYG editors faced in Drupal over the years and how CKSource intends to help companies better adapt their content to Drupal 8 thanks to CKEditor and a variety of new services planned for the future.
He demonstrated various cool new features in CKEditor, including ACF and the editor’s ability to handle pasting from various sources, which attendees got a kick out of because it easily lets big websites control the look of their content. Overall, guests were quite impressed and happy to finally see CKEditor in Drupal!
# Large Scale and Drupal
Pfizer was especially excited about the inclusion of CKEditor in Drupal 8 core since they use the editor in many current projects. Mike Lamb, Director at Pfizer, explained how they deployed 240 Drupal sites to 46 countries in 18 months! They are a perfect example of how large multinational corporations can successfully use the Open Source model.
Cancer Research UK was also in attendance. They showed how they intend to use Drupal 8 to make the world a better place.
On Acquia’s side, Angela Byron hosted an informative session showing off Drupal 8 and its various functionalities, including Responsive Design. Angela also showed how CKEditor has been implemented thus far.
Gábor Hojtsy elaborated on Drupal 8’s Multilingual and Spark initiatives, which CKEditor is part of.
Jeff Eaton of Lullabot focused on mobile strategies in future Drupal projects and how content needs to be adapted to various platforms, such as mobile phones, tablets, TVs and so on. You can read more about the Drupal 8 Mobile initiative here.
The Large Scale Drupal event was a positive experience for CKSource. It underlined the fact that corporations are actively engaged in merging the Open Source movement with commercial expectations, which means companies like CKSource have bright future ahead of them! We would like to thank everyone who attended! If you have comments please leave them below.
